Iron Platform Frame Upgrade — Metal Slatted Bed Base

Replace the wooden slats on any of our ottoman beds with a welded metal platform frame, finished with a protective coating so it will not rust. This is the hinged panel your mattress rests on — the one that lifts on the gas struts and forms the lid of the storage well.

Choose the size that matches the bed you are ordering. This is optional — every bed works perfectly well on its standard slatted base. The upgrade is here for people who want the part that fails first to simply not fail.

Slats are the part that breaks

On almost any storage bed, the wooden slats are the weakest component. They are thin by necessity, they carry the entire mattress and sleeping weight, and on an ottoman they are lifted and lowered again and again. Three things go wrong, and all three are common:

What stays the same

Everything except the platform. Same upholstery and fabric choices, same gas-lift mechanism, same storage capacity underneath, same external dimensions. The struts are matched to the platform at build, so the lift feels the same to use.

Worth considering if

• You have a heavy mattress — pocket-sprung and hybrid mattresses weigh considerably more than foam
• The combined sleeping weight is at the higher end
• You have had a slat break on a previous bed
• The room is prone to damp or humidity
• It is a bed you expect to move house with

How to order it

Add this to your basket alongside your bed, choosing the matching size. Ordering it on its own will not work, as it is built to fit a specific frame. If you have already ordered and want to add it, get in touch before your bed goes into production.

Does the metal platform rust?

No. The frame is coated, which protects it against rust and makes it suitable for humid rooms and coastal homes.

Does it reduce the storage space?

No. The storage well underneath is exactly the same size, and the gas-lift mechanism works identically.

Is it harder to lift?

No — the gas struts are matched to the platform when we build it, so the lift feels the same as a standard base.

Will any mattress work on a metal platform?

Yes — memory foam, pocket-sprung and hybrid all sit on it the same way they would on slats. See mattress compatibility.

Can I add it to a bespoke or custom-size bed?

Vacuum upholstery regularly with a soft brush attachment to remove dust. Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth — avoid rubbing.

For stubborn marks, use a fabric-appropriate cleaner and test on a hidden area first. Avoid overloading the storage compartment beyond the rated weight limit.
