How to Dismantle & Move an Ottoman Bed
Share
Yes — ottoman beds can be fully dismantled, and doing it in the right order makes reassembly much easier when you arrive at the new room.
Before you start
Empty the storage well completely and take a few photos of how the struts and brackets are fitted — this saves guesswork when you rebuild.
Step 1: Remove the mattress
Lift the mattress off first so the base is light enough to work on safely.
Step 2: Detach the gas struts
With the base supported, release the spring clips at each strut end and remove both struts together. Keep left and right paired and labelled if they differ.
Step 3: Separate the headboard
Undo the headboard fixing bolts and lift it away from the frame — this is usually the heaviest single piece, so get help.
Step 4: Break down the base frame
Unbolt the side rails from the end panels, following the reverse of the assembly order. Keep all bolts, washers and fixings together in a labelled bag per section.
Moving day tips
- Wrap upholstered panels in a moving blanket to protect the fabric
- Carry the base frame flat — don't drag it, which stresses the joints
- Store all fixings in the boxes they arrived in if you kept them
Can you move an ottoman bed assembled?
Small single frames sometimes move as one piece through wide doorways, but most double, king and super king frames need dismantling to get around stairs and corners safely.
