Ottoman Bed Gas Strut Replacement: Step-by-Step UK Guide

A tired gas lift is the single most common reason an ottoman bed stops working properly. The good news: gas struts (pistons) are a cheap, standard part and replacing them is a straightforward job for most people. Here's how to do it properly.

Signs your gas struts need replacing

• The base drops too fast or won't hold itself up
• One side lifts higher than the other (uneven struts)
• The lift feels stiff, jerky, or has gone completely slack
• You hear a hiss when opening or closing the base

Step 1: Find the strut rating

Every gas strut has a Newton (N) rating printed or stamped on the barrel. This tells you how much force it exerts. Always order replacements matching the original rating — too weak and the base won't lift with your mattress on; too strong and it'll fly open too fast.

Step 2: Order both struts as a pair

Even if only one side has failed, replace both struts together. Mismatched pressure between old and new struts causes the base to lift unevenly and can strain the frame or hinges over time.

Step 3: Empty and prop the base

Clear the storage well completely and have someone help you prop the base fully open and secure before you start — never work under an unsupported lifted base.

Step 4: Remove the old struts

Most ottoman struts are held with a spring clip or ball-socket fitting at each end. Support the strut, release the clip with a flathead screwdriver, and ease it out. Note the exact orientation before removing the second one.

Step 5: Fit the new struts

Push the new strut's ball socket firmly onto the frame's mounting stud until the clip engages with an audible click. Repeat on the other side, then test the lift through a full cycle before loading the storage well again.

When to replace the whole frame instead

If the strut brackets themselves are bent, rusted or pulling away from the frame, a strut swap won't fix it — that points to a worn-out or poorly built base. At that point a new frame with proper dual gas struts is the more reliable fix.
