An ottoman bed is a bed whose entire base lifts on gas struts, turning the dead space under your mattress into a storage well that runs the full footprint of the bed. It is the most storage you can get from a bedroom without adding a single piece of furniture to the floor.

How the gas-lift mechanism works

Two gas struts — the same principle as a car boot — carry the weight of the base and mattress. You lift from the foot end, the struts take over partway up and hold the base open, and it lowers in a slow, controlled motion rather than dropping. Struts are rated in Newtons and have to match the weight of the base plus your mattress, which is why a heavier mattress needs stronger struts. We match them to the frame at build. These are also sold as gas-lift beds or lift-up storage beds — the same thing.

What size storage do I get with an ottoman bed?

Storage runs the full footprint of the bed, so it scales with size — a double gives a large well, a super king the most of any standard UK size. See our full storage guide.

How much clearance does an ottoman bed need?

You need room at the side for the base to swing fully open — this is the measurement people most often forget. Check the route into the room too: doorways, stairwells and tight landings stop more deliveries than bedroom size does.

Are ottoman beds safe?

Yes, when built with quality dual gas struts and used correctly. The struts hold the base securely open and lower it under control rather than letting it fall. See our safety guide.

Can I put any mattress on an ottoman bed?

Almost — memory foam, pocket sprung and hybrid all work, provided the size matches the frame and the weight suits the strut rating. A very heavy mattress on under-rated struts is the usual cause of a base that won't stay up. See mattress compatibility.
