A double ottoman bed is 4ft6 (135cm) wide by 6ft3 (190cm) long — the most common bed size in the UK. The entire base lifts on gas struts to reveal a storage well running the full footprint of the bed, which is considerably more space than side drawers can offer in the same floor area.

How much storage do you actually get?

An ottoman well uses the entire area under the mattress rather than the strip a drawer occupies. In practice a double holds spare duvets, pillows, suitcases and seasonal clothing together — the things that otherwise fill a wardrobe. Measure the floor space, then check the clearance at the side for the base to lift fully — that's the measurement people forget. Then check the route in: doorways, stairwells and tight turns are the usual obstacle, not the bedroom itself. Frames arrive flat-packed in sections and need two people to move safely.
