Damp, Mould & Musty Smells in Ottoman Storage: Prevention Guide

An enclosed storage well can trap moisture if it isn't ventilated properly — the good news is that a musty smell is easy to prevent with a few habits.

Why storage wells get musty

Warm, damp air from the room condenses inside a sealed storage space, especially if items are stored while still slightly damp, or the well is packed too tightly for air to circulate.

Prevention: keep air moving

Open the base fully every couple of weeks, even briefly, to let trapped air exchange. Avoid packing the well completely full — leave small gaps for airflow between stored items.

Never store damp items

Make sure bedding, clothes or towels are fully dry before storing them. Even slightly damp fabric in an enclosed space is the number one cause of musty odours and, eventually, mould.

Use breathable storage bags

Vacuum-sealed plastic bags can trap existing moisture inside. Breathable cotton storage bags let residual humidity escape while still keeping dust off stored items.

Add a moisture absorber

A small silica gel pack or moisture-absorbing box (the kind used in wardrobes) inside the storage well is a cheap, low-effort way to keep humidity down long-term.

If mould has already started

Remove everything, wipe the base with a mild diluted vinegar or specialist mould-cleaning solution, and let it dry completely and fully ventilated before restocking.
