How to close an ottoman bed step by step

How to Close an Ottoman Bed Safely (Step-by-Step)

An ottoman bed lifts on gas struts and lowers under its own controlled weight. Closing it is easy and safe when you follow the right order — rushing or forcing it is what damages struts and traps bedding. Here's the correct method.

Step 1: Clear the lid path

Make sure nothing is resting on top of the base or hanging over the storage well. Move pillows and throws off the bed first.

Step 2: Tuck stored items inside

Push all bedding, duvets and storage bags fully down into the well so nothing can catch in the hinge or strut as the base lowers. This is the single biggest cause of a base that won't seat flat.

Step 3: Take the weight with both hands

Place both hands flat on the mattress, centred near the foot end. Apply gentle, even downward pressure. The struts do most of the work — you're just guiding it.

Step 4: Lower slowly and evenly

Let the base descend in a smooth, controlled motion. Never let it drop freely and never slam it — sudden force shortens strut life and can crack the frame.

Step 5: Check it's seated flush

The base should sit completely level with the frame. If it springs back or sits proud at one corner, something is snagged or the struts may be worn.

Safety tips

  • Keep fingers clear of the hinge edges as the base meets the frame.
  • Don't let children operate the lift mechanism.
  • If the base won't stay down, don't force it — see why your ottoman bed isn't closing.
